Marina Park

Marina Park is the centrepiece of Kirkland's waterfront — a small urban park on the Lake Washington shore where the downtown meets the water. There is a public boat launch, a swimming beach open in summer, and a grassy area that fills with families on warm afternoons. The float plane activity on the lake adds a pleasant dose of local character; planes buzz in and out with some regularity, banking over the water.

The park connects to a waterfront walkway that runs north toward Houghton and south past various restaurants and galleries. On clear days the views across Lake Washington to Seattle and the Olympic Mountains beyond are exceptional. Sunset brings out the walkers and joggers; it's a genuinely pleasant stretch of public lakefront.

A farmers' market operates in and around the park area on Wednesdays and Saturdays, running from spring through autumn with local produce, baked goods, and craft vendors.

A story
Kirkland was founded in 1888 by English industrialist Peter Kirk, who planned to build a steel mill here to supply the railroad construction boom. The steel works never materialised — the 1893 depression killed the project — but the town was platted and named for him. The Peter Kirk Building downtown still stands, one of the last remnants of that era.
