Whitman Mission National Historic Site

Historic mission site tied to one of the Columbia Plateau's defining conflicts.

Whitman Mission National Historic Site preserves the place where Marcus and Narcissa Whitman worked among the Cayuse people before the killings of 1847. The story is complicated, painful, and central to understanding the colonial history of the Columbia Plateau.

The site is west of town and feels quiet today, with walking paths, interpretive displays, and wide views over the valley. It is a better stop when you give it time rather than treating it as a quick marker.
