Yakima Sportsman State Park protects a patch of irrigated river floodplain southeast of downtown. The contrast with the surrounding dry country is the interesting part: trees, water, birds, and picnic space where the valley would otherwise feel much harsher.
It is not a wilderness park, but it is a good outdoor stop close to town and a useful reminder of how water shapes Yakima.
