A historic district along West Main Street in the city of Oconto, listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its collection of commercial and residential buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The district reflects the prosperity that came to Oconto County during the logging boom of the 1880s and 1890s, when the timber from the northern forests moved through the county's mills and the money built solid brick storefronts and comfortable houses.
The self-guided walking tour map available from the local chamber of commerce covers the key buildings and their histories. The Oconto County Courthouse (1892) at the centre of town is a dignified Romanesque Revival building in locally quarried sandstone. The First Church of Christ, Scientist on Main Street is one of the earliest Christian Science churches in Wisconsin. The district rewards a slow walk, particularly if you have an interest in small-town Midwest architecture from the period when the timber trade was transforming the region.
