Flambeau Paper Mill

The Flambeau Paper Mill has been the economic backbone of Park Falls for over a century. The papermaking tradition is written into the town's identity — the Flambeau River provided the water and the surrounding forests provided the fiber, and for generations this was what the Northwoods economy ran on.

The handsome Neoclassical office building from 1905, visible from the road, is on the National Register of Historic Places. It's a reminder that the timber and paper industry was once a source of genuine civic pride and wealth in this part of Wisconsin, before mechanization and market changes reduced the workforce dramatically.

A story
Park Falls has been a paper town since 1889, when the first mill opened on the Flambeau River. The mill's office building, a 1905 Neoclassical structure, is now on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the more distinguished buildings in a region not known for architectural ambition. The mill itself continues to operate, making it one of the longest continuously operating paper mills in Wisconsin.
