Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge

The Bong Bridge carries US Highway 2 across the Saint Louis River between Superior and Duluth, and at nearly two miles long it is the longer of the two bridges connecting the twin ports. It is named for Richard Ira Bong, a World War II fighter ace from Superior who became the top American air ace of the war, credited with 40 aerial victories. A full-scale replica P-38 Lightning fighter — the type Bong flew — is mounted on a pedestal near the Wisconsin end of the bridge.

The bridge itself offers sweeping views of the Saint Louis River estuary and the wetlands on both sides, which are excellent for wildlife watching. Great blue herons fish the shallows below, and bald eagles are commonly spotted riding thermals above the bridge. The adjacent Bong Recreation Area has trails through the river delta.
