Douglas County Courthouse

The Douglas County Courthouse at 1313 Belknap Street is one of Superior's most handsome buildings, a Romanesque Revival structure that has anchored the city's civic centre since 1889. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and still functions as a working courthouse.

The exterior is built from red sandstone quarried from the Apostle Islands region, with turrets, arched windows, and the solid bulk typical of the style. The interior has been maintained with considerable care: the original woodwork, tile floors, and courtroom fittings survive largely intact. Worth a look if you are passing through downtown.
