Duey and Julia Wright House

The Duey and Julia Wright House is one of two Frank Lloyd Wright-designed residences in Wisconsin outside of Madison — a notable distinction for a small city. Built in 1958 on a wooded bluff above the Wisconsin River, the house is a Usonian design: single-story, L-shaped, and integrated with the landscape rather than set upon it.

The house is privately owned and not open for public tours, but it is visible from the road below and regularly included on architectural walking maps of the city. Wright enthusiasts will want to seek it out.

A story
Frank Lloyd Wright designed this Usonian house for Duey and Julia Wright (no relation) in 1958, just a year before his death. He placed it on a bluff above the Wisconsin River with an expansive horizontal roofline that reaches out toward the water — a characteristic gesture in his late residential work.
