Igreja São Benedito is one of Teresina's best-known churches, standing on Praça da Liberdade in the old centre. Its twin towers and pale facade make it an easy landmark, and the dedication to Saint Benedict the Moor links it to the Afro-Brazilian Catholic tradition found across the northeast.
The church is most rewarding as part of a central walk that also takes in Praça Pedro II, the craft centre, the state museum, and the government palace. Go in the morning or late afternoon; the surrounding streets are hard work under the midday sun.
