Praia da Barra is the longest beach in Rio, an almost uninterrupted 18-kilometre run of wide sand stretching west from the foot of the hills. It is younger, more open, and more car-oriented than the Zona Sul beaches, with bigger, cleaner waves that make it the city's main surf and kitesurf strand. The crowds thin out the further west you walk, and the early stretches near Avenida do Pepê draw a fit, beach-sport set.
There is no wave-pattern promenade or postcard skyline here — the appeal is space, surf, and a more local, suburban beach day. Kiosks line the front for coconut water and grilled snacks, and the consistent breeze keeps it comfortable even at the height of summer.
