Tijuca National Park is the largest urban forest in the world, covering the mountains in the heart of Rio. The forest was replanted in the 1860s after coffee farming had stripped the hillsides bare -- a remarkable early example of environmental restoration. Today it is home to hiking trails, waterfalls, lookout points and abundant wildlife including toucans, monkeys and coatis. The hike to Pico da Tijuca, the highest point at 1,022 metres, takes about two hours and rewards you with panoramic views of the entire city.
