Valongo Wharf

Valongo Wharf is one of Rio de Janeiro's most important and painful historic sites. Hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans arrived here, making it one of the largest known landing points of the Atlantic slave trade in the Americas.

The wharf was rediscovered during urban works in 2011 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is not a grand monument, but the exposed stone landing area carries more weight than many larger memorials.
