Canyon do Funil

Canyon do Funil is a narrow gorge where basalt walls close in on either side of the river, creating a dramatic slot canyon popular for rappelling and natural swimming. The main descent drops roughly 20 metres into the canyon, landing in a clear pool that is deep enough to swim safely. There are also sections where visitors can jump into the water from lower ledges, graded by height for varying levels of nerve.

The canyon sits in private land that is managed for ecotourism, so you visit as part of a guided group rather than independently. Operators supply all the rappelling equipment and brief you on technique before the descent — the skill level required is genuinely low, which makes this accessible to almost anyone who is comfortable with heights. The combination of canyon geology, river swimming, and a moderate adrenaline hit makes it one of the most satisfying half-days in the Brotas area.

A story
The canyon's name — Funil means funnel — describes the way the cliff walls narrow as you descend, squeezing the river into a tight channel before it opens into a wide pool. Rappelling groups are lowered in one at a time because the drop is only wide enough for a single person.
