Jacaré-Pepira Rafting

Rafting on the Jacaré-Pepira is what put Brotas on the map. The river drops through a series of Class III and IV rapids, with enough technical challenge to keep experienced paddlers engaged and enough thrills to make it genuinely exciting for first-timers. Operators run the standard rafting route in groups of six to eight people per inflatable raft, with a trained guide steering from the back. Most trips take two to three hours on the water, and no prior experience is needed.

Dozens of operators in Brotas offer the same basic route, with prices and safety standards varying. It is worth booking with an operator that belongs to ABETA (the Brazilian Ecotourism and Adventure Travel Association), which sets minimum safety requirements. Most companies rent wetsuits for the cooler months, and all will supply helmets and life jackets. The best sections of the river are north of town, where the valley narrows and the current picks up.

A story
The Jacaré-Pepira cuts through volcanic rock formations, producing a series of Class III and IV rapids along a stretch that takes around two hours to navigate by raft. The name Jacaré-Pepira means 'painted caiman' in Tupi — the river was once dense with wildlife, and the occasional caiman is still spotted in the calmer pools downstream.
