Morro da Cruz

The dominant hill overlooking the city, accessible by a cable car (bondinho) that rises from the Suspiro neighbourhood to a platform near the summit. The panoramic view from the top takes in the entire bowl of the city, the surrounding ridges of the Serra do Mar, and on clear days the distant lowlands toward the coast. The summit also has a large illuminated cross that is visible from across the urban area at night.

The cable car is the easiest option for the view, but it is also worth walking up on one of the several trails that start from the edges of the city — the ascent takes around an hour and the forest cover on the slopes holds birds, butterflies, and the cooler air that Nova Friburgo's altitude provides. The summit area has a bar and food stalls on weekends.

A story
The cross on the summit has stood in various forms since the Portuguese colonial period, when hilltops were crowned with crosses to mark Christian territory and serve as landmarks for travellers in the forested serra. The cable car arrived in the 20th century, but the tradition of climbing the hill on foot for a blessing or a view is considerably older than any mechanised ascent.
