Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo

Rococo Carmelite church anchoring one of Serro's finest colonial squares.

Nossa Senhora do Carmo was built by the Carmelite third order in the late eighteenth century. Its rococo altars and painted details reward a look inside, while the approach from Praca Joao Pinheiro gives the church a fine sense of ceremony.

Together with Santa Rita and the surrounding houses, it forms one of the most memorable corners of Serro's protected centre. This is a good place to stop rather than rush through the church circuit.
