Museo de Sitio

Preserved eruption-damaged houses that show how violently Chaitén changed in 2008.

The Museo de Sitio is less a conventional museum than a small act of memory. A few houses damaged by the 2008 eruption and flooding were left as evidence of what happened when ash, water, and volcanic debris pushed through the town.

It takes only a short visit, but it gives useful context before hiking the volcano. Chaitén's story is not just dramatic geology; it is also a town deciding whether and how to come back.
