San Pedro is a small town with an enormous hinterland, and the writing about it splits cleanly in two. Half of it is logistics — what a tour costs, whether you can drive yourself, how many days you need before the altitude stops hurting. The other half is the argument about whether the place is worth the effort, because a week of dawn departures and two-hour drives is not everyone's holiday. The blogs below cover both halves, and two of them are in Spanish or written by Chileans, which is not the norm for this part of the world.
What connects them is that none of them stops at the standard circuit. Between them they will take you to the ignimbrite columns on the Tara road, the cactus canyon at Guatín, the petroglyph fields north of town and the orchard gorge behind Toconao — a dozen places we added to this guide because these five writers and one guiding outfit had already been there.
