The Cathedral of Saint Peter the Apostle is the official diocesan cathedral of Buga and predates the better-known pilgrimage basilica in importance, if not in pilgrimage traffic. The building that stands today dates from the late 19th century and occupies the main central plaza — the Parque Cabal — which gives it a more civic presence than the basilica a few blocks away.
The interior has the accumulated decoration of more than a century of donations and renovations: painted altars, carved woodwork, and devotional paintings in various styles. The plaza outside is the true heart of the colonial town, with benches, palms, and the kind of unhurried afternoon pace that the pilgrimage streets nearby lack.
