The Diocesan Cathedral of Zipaquirá stands on the Plaza de los Comuneros and is the main church of the Catholic diocese of the same name. The current building is a 19th-century reconstruction of an earlier colonial church, its facade simple and whitewashed in the Andean colonial style, with twin towers and a broad entrance staircase.
The interior is less austere than the exterior suggests: carved wooden altarpieces, colonial-era religious paintings, and a sense of deep local usage give it more character than a first glance implies. The church is an active place of worship and the plaza in front of it — lined with trees and surrounded by government buildings and low colonial arcaded blocks — is the social heart of the town. Markets and vendors gather here on weekends, and the atmosphere is that of a working Colombian provincial town rather than a tourist site. Worth twenty minutes before or after the Salt Cathedral.
