Tren de la Sabana

The Tren de la Sabana is a tourist steam train that runs on weekend mornings from Bogotá's La Sabana station to Zipaquirá, covering 50 km of historic track across the high savannah north of the capital. The journey takes about two hours each way and is as much a destination as a means of transport: the old locomotive and restored carriages are pleasant, the countryside is rolling and green, and stopping for a chicha (fermented corn drink) at the intermediate village of Cajicá is part of the scheduled programme.

Trains depart from La Sabana station (Calle 13, near La Candelaria) on Saturday and Sunday mornings, returning in the afternoon; the schedule allows a few hours in Zipaquirá including the Salt Cathedral. Book tickets in advance at weekends — the train is popular with Colombian families and fills up. The round trip takes a full day.

A story
The Sabana train was established as a tourist excursion after the regular passenger service between Bogotá and Zipaquirá was suspended. The route crosses the Bogotá savannah (sabana) at roughly 2,600 metres elevation, passing through farmland and eucalyptus groves on a track that has existed since the late 19th century. The slow speed of the heritage steam locomotive is not a disadvantage — the landscape deserves to be seen slowly.
