Statue of San Pedro

Hilltop statue of St Peter watching over Alausi, with panoramic valley views

A large statue of St Peter stands on the hill above Alausi, reachable by a short climb from the town centre. The patron saint of the town looks out over the Chanchan River valley and the deep gorge the railway descends into. On a clear day the view extends to the snowy flanks of Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest peak.

The walk up takes about 20 minutes and is worthwhile for the perspective it gives over the town and the dramatic landscape it sits in. Go in the morning before cloud fills the valley.
