Cayambe-Coca Páramo Trails

Papallacta sits at the edge of the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve, one of Ecuador's largest protected areas. The páramo — high-altitude grassland dotted with cushion plants, bromeliads and the strange, spiky frailejón — stretches away from the village toward Antisana and the cloud forest at lower elevations. Several trails start within walking distance of the hot springs.

The most popular short walk takes you along the lagoons that supply Quito's drinking water — a one- to two-hour circuit on clear paths with good views back toward the village. Longer hikes climb toward the tree line and into sections of cloud forest where the birding is excellent: tanagers, hummingbirds and, with luck, the spectacled bear. The altitude (3,300 metres and rising) means you should walk slowly and drink plenty of water. Bring a windproof and rain gear regardless of the forecast.
