Gypsy Cove

Penguin beach and viewpoint, half an hour from Stanley

Address Gypsy Cove, East Falkland

A picture-postcard cove of white sand and turquoise water about 30 minutes' drive east of Stanley, on the Cape Pembroke peninsula. The clear water and clean sand could be tropical were it not for the wind. Magellanic penguins nest in burrows in the dunes behind the beach and waddle down to swim throughout the day.

A boardwalk and viewing platform let you watch the penguin colony without disturbing it. The walk continues out to Cape Pembroke and the lighthouse — the easternmost point in the Falklands. Bring layers; the wind is fierce even in summer.

A story
Some of the beaches near Gypsy Cove were mined by Argentine forces in 1982 and were only fully cleared in 2020. The cleared areas are now open to walkers, while the penguin colonies that nested behind the mined fences benefited from decades without human disturbance.
