Fort Kyk-Over-Al

Fort Kyk-Over-Al is one of Guyana's oldest European historic sites, a small Dutch fort ruin on an island where the Essequibo, Mazaruni, and Cuyuni rivers meet. Only a brick archway and scattered foundations remain, but the location is superb and the history is unusually deep for such a modest site.

The fort dates to the early 17th century and once guarded Dutch interests on the river system before changing hands in the colonial struggles that shaped the Guianas. It works best as part of a river trip from Bartica, combined with the confluence and nearby islands.
