Bartica's defining geographic feature is the meeting of three rivers: the Essequibo coming up from the south, the Mazaruni joining from the west, and the Cuyuni flowing in from the southwest. From the point of land where these rivers converge you see open water in multiple directions, islands in the middle distance, and the dark forest edge marking the start of the interior. It is a genuinely dramatic spot.
The best way to experience the confluence is by boat, and this can be arranged easily at the waterfront. Boats heading to Baganara Island or to the mining regions further up the Mazaruni regularly pass the confluence, and the river traffic — long dugout canoes, supply boats, occasional dredging vessels — gives a sense of how important these waterways remain as transport corridors into the interior.
