Museo de Ayabaca

Free museum and gateway to the province's pre-Inca sites and ruins

Address Calle Cáceres 468, 2nd floor

A small free museum half a block from the Plaza Central with a handful of archaeological finds, old photographs, a whale skull found in the desert, and a replica of a pre-Inca lord in the style of the Lord of Sipán. The collection is modest, but the real reason to come is to get practical information about the rest of the province — the petroglyphs at Samanga, the altar at Cerro Cuchallín, the Aypate ruins, and the Bosque de Cuyas cloud forest are all best reached with the help of the staff here. The museum is on the second floor above an internet café, with no sign at street level — knock on the adjacent door.
