Sanctuary of the Lord of Muruhuay

The Sanctuary of the Lord of Muruhuay stands near Acobamba, about 12 km from Tarma, on the flank of Cerro Shalacoto. It is one of the valley's main pilgrimage places, with special importance around the May celebrations for the image of Christ kept there.

Even outside festival time, the sanctuary is a useful stop for seeing how Catholic devotion, Quechua place names, and highland village life meet around Tarma.
