The 10-kilometre trail from Old Tingo to Kuélap is a serious climb — the path rises over 1,000 metres through cloudforest — but it rewards those who make it with a gradual appreciation of the landscape the Chachapoyas chose to defend. Allow three to five hours depending on fitness. The trail begins behind the village and follows the ridgeline up; local guides can be arranged in the village for those who want company or reassurance on the route.
Horses and mules can be hired in Old Tingo for those who prefer to ride rather than walk. Riders still need to dismount near the entrance and walk the final approach through the gateways. Agree the price and the return arrangement clearly before setting out.
Start early: by mid-morning the sun on the exposed upper sections can be punishing, and an early start means arriving at Kuélap with energy remaining to explore the site. Bring plenty of water; there is nothing on the trail itself.
