Kuélap Cable Car (Teleférico)

The teleférico from Nuevo Tingo is the most comfortable way to reach Kuélap, carrying passengers from the valley floor to within walking distance of the fortress entrance in roughly 20 minutes. The three-gondola system climbs over a thousand metres of vertical relief, crossing above cloudforest and offering increasingly dramatic views of the Utcubamba valley as it rises.

The cable car departs from a modern terminal in Nuevo Tingo (a few kilometres up the mountain road from Old Tingo). Tickets are sold at the terminal. The gondolas hold a small number of passengers at a time, so queues can develop at peak season — arrive early or mid-week if possible. From the upper station it is a short walk to the main entrance of Kuélap.

The system was inaugurated in 2017 and was the first cable car in Peru built specifically for archaeological site access. Before it opened, all visitors had to hike or ride for several hours — the teleférico transformed access and significantly increased visitor numbers.
