Machu Pirqa

Machu Pirqa ("old wall" in Quechua) is a smaller Chachapoyas archaeological site on the left bank of the Kuntichaka River, a tributary of the Utcubamba, at around 1,900 metres elevation. Far less visited than Kuélap, it offers a glimpse of Chachapoyas building without the crowds, and a chance to see how thoroughly these ruins are still embedded in working farmland and forest.

The site is a worthwhile half-day excursion for travellers with more than one night in Tingo who want to look beyond the main fortress. Ask locally about the current track condition and whether a guide is recommended, as access can be muddy in the wet season.
