Grytviken Cemetery

Windy cemetery holding the graves of Ernest Shackleton, Frank Wild, and whalers who died on South Georgia.

Grytviken Cemetery is where most visitors go quiet. Ernest Shackleton was buried here in 1922 after dying aboard the Quest during his last expedition, and Frank Wild's ashes were placed beside him in 2011.

The cemetery predates the church and also holds the graves of whalers, sailors, and others who died on South Georgia. It is not grand, but the setting makes the polar history feel close: mountains behind, the cove below, and the old station only a short walk away.
