The South Georgia Museum is the best first stop in Grytviken. It sits in the old whaling station manager's villa and explains the island through whaling, exploration, wildlife, geology, and the Falklands War.
The building also softens the place a little. After the rusting station outside, the rooms full of photographs, tools, ship models, and natural-history displays make it easier to understand why this remote harbour mattered so much.
