Cerro del Verdun

Cerro del Verdun rises west of Minas and gives one of the easiest views over the Lavalleja hills. The climb is short but exposed, with a sanctuary at the top and a broad sweep of countryside below. Even if you are not interested in the pilgrimage side, the hill explains why Minas feels different from flatter towns near the coast.

The site is busiest around religious dates, especially in April. Outside those times it is a peaceful half-day outing from town, best done in the morning or late afternoon when the light is softer and the heat less blunt.

A story
Cerro del Verdun is one of Uruguay's best-known Catholic pilgrimage hills. Every 19 April, pilgrims climb toward the sanctuary of the Virgin of Verdun, turning a modest hill outside Minas into a national devotional gathering.
