The Salto del Penitente drops about sixty metres off a rock face in the Sierra de las Ánimas, and the park built around it covers nearly sixty hectares of hill country on Ruta 8, east of Minas. The waterfall is the icon; the park is what makes a day of it.
There are walking routes to the top and the base, adventure activities including zip lines and climbing, and a restaurant at the entrance, which in this part of Uruguay is not a given. The flow varies sharply with the season — after dry months it can be a trickle, so ask before you drive out for the cascade specifically.
The park is registered with the Ministry of Tourism under the name Salto del Agua and takes bookings on the WhatsApp number below.
