Laguna de Rocha

Laguna de Rocha is the protected lagoon south of the city, where freshwater wetlands, pasture, sandbar, and Atlantic surf meet. It is one of the best birding areas in eastern Uruguay, with flamingos, swans, shorebirds, and raptors depending on the season.

The lagoon is not a manicured park. Access points are rural and conditions vary with weather and water levels, which is part of the appeal. Go with binoculars, patience, and enough daylight to find your way back; a car makes the outing far easier from Rocha.

A story
Laguna de Rocha is separated from the Atlantic by a shifting sandbar that opens and closes naturally. That changeable mouth is exactly what makes the wetland so rich: salt and fresh water mix, fish move through, and birds gather in numbers that make the lagoon nationally important.
