The Altos Mirandinos is a cluster of highland towns in Miranda state, perched above 1,000 metres in the mountains southwest of Caracas. The altitude keeps temperatures around a pleasant 20°C year-round — a welcome escape from the heat of the capital, which is less than an hour away by road.
Los Teques, the state capital, is the largest settlement and the commercial centre of the area. San Antonio de los Altos, on a ridge overlooking the valley, is popular with Caraqueños for its weekend restaurants and mountain views. The smaller towns — San Diego, San José, San Pedro, El Jarillo, and Carrizal — remain quieter and more picturesque, surrounded by green mountains and coffee farms.
