Cayo Sombrero

The most famous of the Morrocoy cays — a small palm-fringed island with two long beaches separated by a low spine of vegetation. The water on the lee side is calm and shallow enough to wade out a hundred metres, and there are coral patches close to shore for snorkelling. It also has the only food on the cays: a handful of rustic shacks selling grilled fish, arepas, and cold beer.

Because of its reputation, Sombrero is the busiest cay at weekends. If you want it quiet, go on a weekday or arrange an early morning boat — most day-trippers do not arrive before ten.
