Ksar Tamentit

Tamentit is the most important of the historic ksour around Adrar — a walled oasis village about 15 kilometres south of town, with a long and complicated history as a cosmopolitan caravan stop on the trans-Saharan trade routes. It was an established medieval centre of learning, with Berber, Arab, and Jewish communities living in adjacent quarters.

What remains today is a ruined old town of mud-brick alleys, the modern village beside it, and a small museum installed in a restored building that explains the local culture, the trade routes, and the legend of the iron meteorite said to have given the village its name. The surrounding palmery is one of the more productive in the region and the foggaras here are still in use.

A story
Tamentit had one of the largest Jewish communities in the Sahara until 1492, when the Spanish-trained preacher Mohammed al-Maghili led a campaign that destroyed the synagogue and drove the community out. The expulsion was a turning point in the religious geography of the western Sahara.
