Belouizdad (Hussein Dey)

Belouizdad (formerly the Belcourt quarter) is one of the most densely populated districts of Algiers, a working-class neighbourhood on the slope below the Martyrs' Memorial. It is significant partly because Albert Camus grew up here — the family lived in a two-room apartment, and the poverty of his childhood is directly reflected in his early novels The Stranger and The First Man.

The neighbourhood today is busy, noisy, and entirely authentic. The street life is intense and the local market is one of the best in the city for fresh produce and Algerian street food. The Cave of Cervantes is in Belouizdad, and the walk through the neighbourhood to reach it gives a more honest picture of the city than the tourist-oriented lower Casbah.
