Moulin Ferrero

The Moulin Ferrero is an old watermill set in a gorge above the town, about 30 minutes' walk from the town centre. The gorge itself is the main attraction: the Oued Bou Saâda runs through a narrow rocky canyon here, with sheer walls rising on both sides, before opening out into the palm groves below. The combination of moving water, cool shade, and dramatic rock scenery makes it a popular picnic spot for local families.

The walk from town passes through the upper section of the palmeraie and offers good views back down over the oasis and the town. The mill is no longer operating but the building is intact.

A story
The mill was built by an Italian family, the Ferreros, who settled in Bou Saâda during the French colonial period. The gorge above town — narrow, rocky, and dramatically different from the palm-filled valley below — was one of Dinet's favourite painting locations. Several of his most celebrated canvases show the gorge in afternoon light, with women carrying water jugs on their heads along the path that still exists today.
