A smaller but beautifully preserved Ottoman palace in the old medina, adjacent to the larger Ahmed Bey Palace complex. The Dar Ahmed dates from the 18th century and features the classic courtyard arrangement of Ottoman Algerian domestic architecture: a central fountain courtyard surrounded by arcaded galleries, painted stucco work, carved cedar ceilings, and geometric tile floors. The building is less visited than the Ahmed Bey Palace but in some ways more intimate.
The palace sits within the tangle of the old medina lanes and requires some effort to find; a local guide or careful navigation from Place des Martyrs is recommended. When open, the courtyard can be entered freely or for a small fee depending on the current administration of the site.
