Sidi Salem Mosque

Domed mosque honouring the city's founding saint west of the centre

The Sidi Salem mosque sits in the Guemar district just west of central El Oued, marking the burial place of the saint traditionally credited with founding the Souf valley settlements in the 15th century. The whitewashed building, with its cluster of small domes typical of the region, is one of the most visited religious sites in the Souf and is the focus of an annual ziyara (pilgrimage) that draws people from across eastern Algeria.

Non-Muslim visitors are generally not allowed inside but can admire the exterior and the surrounding cemetery. The domed silhouette against the sand dunes and date palms is a classic Souf view. Dress modestly and ask before photographing people.

A story
Sidi Salem was a 15th-century saint from Tunisia credited with founding the Souf settlements. The current mosque dates from a later rebuilding but follows the traditional domed Souf style — multiple small white domes clustered over a low square plan.
