Souf Museum

Regional ethnographic museum covering Souf valley life and history

The Souf Museum (Musée du Souf) is the only proper museum in town and a useful first stop if you want to understand the region. The collection covers archaeology — finds from the Neolithic when the Sahara was greener — alongside ethnographic displays of traditional Souf life: clothing, jewellery, tools, the architecture of the domed houses, the ghout irrigation system, and the role of the date palm in local economy.

Labels are mostly in Arabic and French, but the objects speak for themselves. The building is modest and the visit takes an hour at most, but it gives helpful context for everything else you see in town. Opening hours are unpredictable, particularly in summer; ask at your accommodation or check before walking over.
