Mount Tahat

At 2,908 metres, Mount Tahat is the highest peak in Algeria and the centrepiece of the Hoggar Mountains. It rises from the Atakor volcanic plateau — a landscape of dark basalt and eroded phonolite spires — and on a clear day the views from the summit extend for an extraordinary distance across the Sahara.

Tahat is not a technical climb, but it is a serious mountain day in desert conditions. The standard ascent takes around five to six hours and requires a guide, good boots, and plenty of water. The trailhead is most easily reached from Assekrem, making it natural to combine the two in a multi-day expedition from Tamanrasset.
