Getting There

Tamanrasset is served by Aguenar – Haôed Mag Moknine Airport (TMR), about 10 kilometres north of town. Air Algérie operates regular flights from Algiers, and there are also connections from Ghardaia and other Algerian cities. Flying is far the most practical option — the overland distances are immense.

By road from Algiers the distance is around 2,000 kilometres, almost all of it across open desert. The RN1 highway runs south through Ghardaia and In Salah, and the last stretch into Tamanrasset is partly paved. Overlanders making this journey need fuel and water for very long desert stretches between towns. It is not something to attempt casually.

Tamanrasset is also a waypoint on the trans-Saharan route toward Niger and West Africa, but the southern border crossings are subject to security restrictions and can close without notice. Check the current situation carefully before planning any onward journey to the south.

All foreign visitors to the deep south of Algeria are required to register with the local authorities and travel with an authorised guide for any excursion outside the town itself. Arrange permits and guides in advance through a reputable Tamanrasset agency.
