Amguid Crater

A near-perfect impact crater in the middle of the Sahara, about 250 kilometres north of Tamanrasset. Amguid is roughly 450 metres in diameter and 30 metres deep, with a raised rim and a flat, sand-filled floor. It is one of the best-preserved meteorite impact craters on Earth, partly because the extreme aridity of the central Sahara has protected it from erosion.

The crater is estimated to be around 100,000 years old. From the rim, you look down into a perfect bowl of sand, strikingly geometric against the surrounding rocky desert. There are no facilities, no signs, and no road — reaching Amguid requires a multi-day desert expedition with a guide, a 4x4, and full supplies. It is genuinely remote, even by Saharan standards, and very few people visit. For those with the means and motivation to get here, it is an unforgettable sight — a reminder of the cosmic violence that shapes even the most desolate corners of the planet.
