Roman Theatre

One of the best-preserved Roman theatres in Algeria, with tiered seating carved into a natural slope on the south side of the city. The auditorium seated around 3,500 people and retains much of its original stonework. The stage backdrop, though largely reconstructed, gives a convincing sense of the theatrical setting audiences would have known.

Climb to the upper tiers for a broad view across the entire site. The grid plan of the city becomes clear from above, and on a clear day the ridgelines of the Aurès Mountains frame the scene on every side. It's the best single vantage point at Timgad.

A story
The theatre was partially restored in the 20th century and still hosts performances during summer festivals — making it one of the very few ancient Roman theatres in Africa that remains a functioning venue.
