Mercado do Himalaya is a practical central market southeast of Jardim da Cultura, with fruit, vegetables, fish, repairs, and the usual everyday clutter of city trade. It is not a curated visitor attraction, which is exactly why it is useful.
Go in the morning if you want the most activity. Keep valuables tucked away, ask before photographing people, and treat the market as a place of work rather than a spectacle.
