Baia dos Tigres

Baia dos Tigres is the great coastal feature on Iona's Atlantic side, an extensive bay and sand-spit landscape that feels closer in spirit to Namibia's Skeleton Coast than to tropical Angola. It is remote, wind-scoured, and unforgettable when conditions are clear.

The area is important for marine and bird life, including Cape fur seals and seabirds, but it is not a casual beach outing. Access depends on route conditions, tides, and local permission. Go with people who know the coast.

A story
Baia dos Tigres was once tied to a fishing settlement on a long sand spit, but the sea cut the spit and left the place isolated. Today the name carries the bleak romance of Angola's desert coast: sand, wrecks, seals, and absence.
